Chair of the Arts, Culture and Heritage portfolio, Councillor Rohan Leppert, said the third iteration of the Music Plan would cement Melbourne’s status as a leading global music city.

“Melbourne’s vibrant music scene is a critical part of our city’s culture and a major contributor to what makes us the World’s Most Liveable City,” Cr Leppert said.

“The latest Melbourne Live Music Census shows our city boasts more than 500 live music venues, more per capita than any other major global city including New York, London, Tokyo or Los Angeles.

“Our music industry generates in excess of $1 billion; with 60,000 annual performances, including Council led events like Melbourne Music Week, attracting more than 15 million patrons.

“The new Melbourne Music Plan will continue to build on the solid foundations of the last eight years, as we expand our support for all elements of the music industry; from artists and collaborators, to music venues, producers, educators, buskers, entrepreneurs, innovators and audiences.”

Some of the key priorities in the new Melbourne Music Plan 2018-2021 include:

– Growing Melbourne’s music startups, musicians and innovative businesses,

– Expanding support for local grassroots artists, buskers, Aboriginal artists and musicians,

– Strengthening Melbourne’s international profile and music tourism.

With Melbourne expected to become Australia’s largest city by 2030, Cr Leppert said it was vital Melbourne’s music culture remained diverse and resilient.

“Our small venues are the life-blood of Melbourne’s local live-music scene while our major entertainment venues attract some of the biggest names in the music world,” Cr Leppert said.

“Council is committed to working with the music industry, all levels of government and the wider community to help ensure Melbourne’s reputation as a global music capital continues to grow.”
