OpenLIVE provides musicians with a simple, hassle-free and affordable method of capturing high-quality audio recordings of their live gigs, and venues the chance to offer this service to artists and earn new revenue.

OpenLIVE’s system is simple. Artists can create a profile online at www.openlive.co and schedule an audio recording of their live gig in any OpenLIVE-enabled venue. Within minutes of the ‘last note played’, artists have a mixed, mastered and optimised recoding of their performance in their secure dashboard waiting for them. Up until this point it’s free – no cost to schedule and capture a high-quality audio recording. Artists only pay if they like what they hear.

While it almost sounds too good to be true, and indeed some of the early artists that trialled the service thought it must have been, OpenLIVE has now proven the quality of their technology, the ease of use, and the benefits for artists after recently ticking over 8,800 recordings from over 5,500 artists. Ultimately the final mix artists hear designed to reflect as accurately as possible what the audience heard on the night giving artists a great way to critique themselves – something that is very tough to do otherwise! Alternatively some bands have used the recording for promo material or to share with their fans on social media while some have actually created a live release – including Dan Sultan who released an early recording completed by OpenLIVE called ‘Dan Sultan – OpenLIVE’.

The system comprises of MasterBuilder, their recording device which has been developed from scratch, and sits as a permanent fixture in some of Australia’s leading live music venues (list below). It takes a left & right feed from the mixing console as well as a feed from a pair of ambient room mics (included with the MasterBuilder – which is professionally installed by OpenLIVE). Connected to the internet, MasterBuilder receives commands from OpenLIVE’s cloud servers to start and stop recording. These details are received as artists schedule recordings for their gig in their private and secure Dashboard.

In their Dashboard, artists can schedule and manage their recordings. This includes the ability to intuitively edit the performance into tracks using OpenLIVE’s GingerbreadMan software and coming soon, edit the mix using GingerbreadMaster – also developed completely from scratch. While OpenLIVE’s cloud-based mixing and mastering has delivered results that impress most, GingerbreadMaster will give artists more control over the final mix.

Importantly, all rights in the recordings remain with the artists.

Over the journey OpenLIVE has also delivered live audio streams from artists including Vera Blue and Lime Cordiale, while also working with festivals like St Kilda Festival, Caloundra Music Festival and SXSW.

OpenLIVE has branched out beyond live music to now be available in over 70 rehearsal rooms across the UK and US for Pirate Studios, a global leader in the music rehearsal space. Pirate Studios offer recordings in every OpenLIVE-enabled rehearsal room included in the booking price. Artists have found this to be an invaluable tool to help them improve their repertoire. Given the success with Pirate Studios, OpenLIVE is now looking to offer the services to interested rehearsal studios in Australia.

Recently, OpenLIVE has partnered with Independent Venue Week (IVW) in the UK where they helped IVW deliver 24 recordings from 6 venues across a week of live gigs, the culmination of which is a double vinyl album which will be released in the UK on Record Store Day in April.

At BIGSOUND in 2017, OpenLIVE was selected to present as part of the inaugural ‘Music Tech Showcase’ as one of 10 leading technology companies influencing the Australian music scene in a positive way.

There are a number of initiatives and partnerships that OpenLIVE are working on during 2018, in particular an exciting new artist discovery platform, whereby artists can submit recordings for potential airplay on partner community radio stations. So we encourage any artist performing at an OpenLIVE-enabled venue to take advantage of this service!

Having now developed a strong brand in the Australian live music scene and the trust of many artists and industry-folk alike, 2018 is set to be a big year for OpenLIVE as they add more live music venues and begin offering their service to Australian rehearsal spaces as they have done in the UK and US.
